📦A Box of Joy, A Season of Hope: Rotary Club of Accra Legon East & EAP Consult Bring Light to Children Battling Cancer🎗️

On 20th December 2025, the Paediatric Oncology Unit of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital was transformed into a space of laughter, music, and renewed hope as the Rotary Club of Accra Legon East, in partnership with EAP Consult, delivered their annual Box-of-Joy Project.

Now in its third consecutive year, this heart-warming initiative reaffirmed Rotary’s enduring commitment to children and families navigating the difficult journey of childhood cancer treatment.

To support the nutritional and household needs of families receiving care at the unit, the Rotary Club donated essential food and household items, including:

• 20 crates of eggs

• 20 bags of rice (25kg each)
• 20 bottles of cooking oil (5 litres each)
• Gino Tomato Paste – 5 boxes (50 sachets per box)
• La Vonce Tomato Paste – 5 boxes (24 tins per box)
• Washing powder – 5 bags (40 pieces of 150g each)
• NutriSnack – 5 boxes (36 pieces per box)
• 400 fresh coconuts distributed to families
That is the impact of compassion in action.

These donations ensured that families could enjoy a nutritious, dignified, and supportive holiday, even within hospital walls.

Beyond the donations, the day unfolded into a joyful funfair. Children sang, performed recitals, laughed freely, and for a few precious hours experienced the simple magic of childhood—away from hospital routines and treatment schedules.

Adding a powerful artistic touch, paintings created by one of the young patients were sold, raising GHS 20,100 to support the work of the Paediatric Oncology Unit. The artwork served as a moving reminder that even in illness, creativity, resilience, and hope can flourish.

The event was graced by the Medical Director of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Dr. Leslie Issah Adam Zakariah, whose consistent support for the Paediatric Oncology Unit has been outstanding.

Also present was Mr. Mawunyo Nutifafa Folie, a student of SOS Hermann Gmeiner School, who, while courageously battling a terminal illness himself, stood in solidarity with the children. Accompanied by friends from his school, he shared words of encouragement and donated gifts to the children.

In addition, Mr. Folie made generous personal contributions, donating pre-owned clothing, five (5) bags of 25kg rice, and five (5) boxes of cooking oil, each containing twelve (12) bottles of 1 litre, further supporting families receiving care at the unit.

In an emotional address, Mr. Folie shared:

“Some battles are never truly understood until they are spoken. Today, I stand here as a voice—a voice for those who feel unheard. I believe in you: in your dreams, your hopes, your passions, and everything that gives you purpose. No matter how difficult life becomes, there is always a way forward. And I promise you this—I will stand with you, step by step, as we move toward that goal.”

Members of the Cure Childhood Cancer Ghana team were formally recognised with citations for their continued support of the Paediatric Oncology Unit.

In total, 87 participants, children, caregivers, partners, and supporters, shared in this celebration of resilience, compassion, and community.

During the presentation, Mr. Sessou, President of the Rotary Club of Accra Legon East and Management Consultant at EAP Consult, reaffirmed the Club’s commitment, stating:

“We are here with you all the way forward.”

The Head Paediatric Oncologist, Dr. Nihad Salifu, highlighted Rotary’s long-standing partnership with the unit, noting that 15 children successfully completed treatment in 2025, many of whom were celebrated during the September Childhood Cancer Awareness event held at Efua Sutherland Park.

She reflected warmly that the Rotary Club had “seen the fruit of their work and are reaching those who are vulnerable beyond their immediate circles.”

To further strengthen paediatric oncology care, the Rotary Club also presented a cheque of GHS 20,000 in support of the unit.

What made the day truly unforgettable was not only the generosity shown, but the smiles of children who, despite the tribulations of cancer treatment, experienced a truly normal and joyful day.

That is the power of community.

Childhood cancer care goes beyond medicine, it requires nutrition, emotional support, and a strong community of care.

Join Cure Childhood Cancer Ghana in supporting children and families on this journey:

Together, we can turn hope into healing.
